Introduction
(Home Page)

Welcome to Cloud of Witnesses, a web site maintained by Larry D. Paarmann. This is a web site made up primarily of book reviews that I have written, position statements on a variety of topics relevant to Christianity and its impact on life, society, and knowledge, and resources that I have found on the web that are very useful to me, and may be to you also. I would be happy to hear from you. You may email me by clicking on the Contact tab.

All documents on this web site are in Adobe Acrobat pdf format. If you do not already have the Acrobat Reader on your computer, you may obtain a free Reader from the Adobe web site:

http://www.adobe.com.

This web site is organized into three primary divisions: Book Reviews, Position Statements, and Resources. The Resources are other web sites that I have found especially useful, such as where to find free electronic books, useful Christian web sites, etc. Please check it out, you may find it valuable. To navigate this web site, click on one of the seven tabs along the top or along the left side of the page. On each page, near the top of the text portion of the page, is an indication of your location. To go back one or more locations, you may click on the indicated page.

As to my particular theological position, I am a conservative, Protestant, Evangelical Christian as defined during the Protestant Reformation. This may be summarized as adherence to the five solas of the Reformation: sola scriptura (by Scripture alone), sola fide (by faith alone), sola gratia (by grace alone), solo Christo (through Christ alone), and soli Deo gloria (to the glory of God alone), and also by the principal doctrine of the Reformation, Justification by Faith alone. More specific and detailed expression may be found by clicking on "Position Statements" along the top or the left side of this page, and note especially the Westminster Confession of Faith, but also the other Position Statements on the page. I welcome those who hold to the theology of this web site, but also, and especially, those who do not. It is my hope that the web site may be useful to you.

Web site motto:

If Christianity is true, which it is, then that fact
has profound implications for all areas of life and knowledge.

Web site Scripture verse:

Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses,
let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely,
and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, . . . (Hebrews 12:1a, ESV)

Web site title:
The web site title, Cloud of Witnesses, comes from the above Bible verse, Hebrews 12:1. The first word of this verse, "Therefore", refers especially back to chapter 11 of Hebrews, where some of the heros of the faith from the Old Testament are described. When Hebrews was written, the New Testament was still in a development phase. Today, our cloud of witnesses includes those in the New Testament, and also the long history of Christianity since then. We may include such figures as Augustine, John Calvin, Martin Luther, John Owen, and Jonathan Edwards, just to name a few. The point is, that cloud of witnesses is much greater now than it was when the author of Hebrews was writing. There is, however, a word of caution that should be mentioned: ". . . how shall we escape if we neglect such a great salvation?" (Hebrews 2:3a, ESV) Many witnesses have testified to the grace of God in Jesus Christ. The question is, how then should we respond, how then should we live, given this great Cloud of Witnesses?
